Redbox Launches Netflix alternative for $8 a month

Redbox has been running a Netflix alternative service in closed beta for the last couple of months.  Redbox Instant by Verizon is a new movie streaming service from the kiosk-based DVD and Game rental service.

The new Netflix alternative by Verizon offers unlimited access to streaming movies and credits for 4 DVD rentals for $8 a month.  Blu-ray and streaming only subscription options are available for $9 and $6 per month as well.

As compared to Netflix, Redbox has a very limited number of titles available for streaming – a major shortcoming as of now.  However I think to be a successful Netflix alternative, Redbox will soon add more and more titles to its catalog.

Ultimately, from a simple maths point of view for $8 a month you get -

  1. Credit for any 4 DVD movies/games at any kiosk.  (4 * $1.20 = $4.80)
  2. Remaining ($8-$4.80 = $3.20) is for streaming movies.  Which is not that bad from a simple mathematics point of view.  However, if you don’t find what you are looking for online when you sit on that couch in the night, it is a very frustrating experience and a waste of $3.20 per month.

As of right now I found it to be pretty limited in terms of what you can stream.  So I am going to stick with Netflix for some time and see if Redbox continues to grow.  I have been a beta user of this Netflix alternative.

Here is how it works?
